The Medium Tank M4, commonly known as the Sherman, was the primary American medium tank during World War II. It was extensively used by the U.S. Army in all theaters of the war and was also supplied in significant numbers to allies, particularly the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union. The M4 remained in service with the U.S. Army until the end of the Korean War. The tank earned its name “Sherman” in the British Army, in honor of the American Civil War General William Sherman, and this name subsequently stuck with the tank in American and other armies. Soviet tank crews affectionately referred to it as “Emcha” (from M4). The M4 became the main American tank platform during World War II, and it served as the basis for numerous specialized variants, self-propelled artillery, and engineering vehicles.
